“The mosque is the home of every righteous person. Allah عز و جل has guaranteed those who have their home in the mosques with the spirit, mercy, and safe passage over the bridge of Hell unto the pleasure of Allah عز و جل.”
“A man asked the Prophet (ﷺ) , "What sort of deeds or (what qualities of) Islam are good?" The Prophet (ﷺ) replied, 'To feed (the poor) and greet those whom you know and those whom you do not Know (See Hadith No. 27).”

Shah Jahan Mosque holds a unique and lasting significance as a place of worship, learning, and community life. As Britain’s first purpose-built mosque, it stands as a symbol of faith, scholarship, and continuity, serving generations of worshippers for more than a century.
While deeply rooted in its origins, the mosque remains a living and active space that continues to meet the spiritual and communal needs of a growing congregation. Its preserved original prayer hall and expanded facilities together reflect both heritage and renewal, demonstrating how the mosque has adapted while remaining true to its purpose.
Set within a peaceful environment, the mosque represents values of reflection, respect, and responsibility, encouraging a sense of harmony within the wider community. Through daily worship, education, and shared community life, Shah Jahan Mosque continues to embody the principles of peace, unity, and service that have defined it since its founding.
Founded in 1889 by Dr. Gottlieb Wilhelm Leitner, the Shah Jahan Mosque is widely recognised as the first purpose-built mosque in the UK. As you step inside, what’s revealed is a place where faith and community come together.
You’ll find us on Oriental Road, Woking (GU22 7BA), about a 15-minute walk from Woking Station or a quick 5-minute cycle from the town centre. If you are travelling by car, there’s on-site parking available.
Our trustees and staff care for the mosque day to day, supporting community programmes, and helping visitors. They have one goal in mind: to serve the community with integrity, transparency, and kindness.
Aiming to bring people together for lasting companionship and a strong foundation in life.
