Marriage (Nikah)

Shah Jahan Mosque Matrimonial

We are delighted you are considering the historic Shah Jahan Mosque as the venue for your marriage ceremony.

A nikah ceremony alone does not create a marriage in the legal sense unless it is conducted as part of a registered civil marriage ceremony.

Shah Jahan Mosque is proud to offer an English Civil marriage ceremony, recognised under the law of the United Kingdom. If you choose an English civil marriage ceremony, one ceremony will cover both religious and civil requirements.

Benefits of a legal English civil marriage ceremony

  • You will be recognised as married under the law of England and Wales.
  • Inheritance rights: As a spouse, you have an automatic right to your spouse’s estate on their death, if he or she dies without a Will. As a cohabitee, your partner has to make provision for you in their Will should they wish for you to inherit. This could mean that you may not be provided for following your partner’s death.
  • Parental responsibility. A father does not automatically acquire parental responsibility following the birth of a child, unless married to the mother. You

can, however, acquire parental responsibility by marrying the child’s mother

(after the birth of your child) or being named on the birth certificate.

  • Financial support: marriage creates legal financial obligations during marriage, during separation, and potentially after divorce.

Conditions in place at the venue:

  • On the date of your marriage ceremony, the bride and groom must be ready to meet the imam and Authorised Person 30 minutes before the marriage ceremony time.
  • Maximum capacity limits must be respected – 35 in the Approved Room of the Shah Jahan Mosque.
  • Food is not permitted in the original Shah Jahan Mosque or prayer halls 1 and 2.
  • If guests are bringing confetti, bring biodegradable confetti only.
  • All attendees are expected to dress modestly and follow the etiquette of the Mosque.
  • There will be no stage or partitions in the original Shah Jahan Mosque.
